Troubled Euro 'Celebrates' 10th Anniversary

January 1 2011 marks 10 years since the Euro was introduced as a common currency in the European Union, its anniversary being overshadowed by fears and uncertainty.

No ceremonies have been scheduled in Brussels to mark the occasion. Most Eurozone countries are preparing to circulate a 2-euro commemorative coin for the anniversary.

According to the most apocalyptic predictions, the common currency will not survive until the end of 2012.

Despite the problems the euro is facing, European Central Bank policymaker Christian Noyer believes it could become the world's leading currency in the next decade if leaders of the single-currency bloc succeed in tightening fiscal integration,

"If we implement all the decisions taken at the Brussels summit we will emerge stronger," Noyer has stated in an article, as cited by The Economic Times.
