Rumen Dimitrov, 20, has been sentenced to 25 years of strict regime imprisonment for the gruesome murder of 21-year-old Graciela Plamenova.

The Targovishte District Court determined that Dimitrov's crime was exceptionally heinous and also declared him guilty of a theft.

He will have to pay a compensation of BGN 30 000 to the family of the deceased victim and will also have to cover the BGN 1800 in costs incurred by the civil plaintiffs and the private prosecutors.

The body of the 21-year-old girl, who had been strangled, was found stuffed into the underbed chest in the children's room of her apartment in end-September.

Dimitrov and Plamenova had known each other for a long time.

She returned from a work and travel program in the UK on June 07.

During one of his visits to her apartment, Dimitrov stole GBP 320.

The 21-year-old girl was living alone because her divorced parents had started working abroad years ago.

In the early hours of September 30, the offender went to her apartment and rang the doorbell.

According to his account of the events, he intended to make arrangements about when he would return the money.

The two started quarreling and she headed for the kitchen, which made him think that she would get a knife.

20-year-old Dimitrov strangled her in the ensuing fight.

He left her apartment in a mess to make it look like a robbery.

On November 01, he returned to the crime scene, put back everything in its place, and hid the dead body in the underbed chest.

Later the same day, the victim's aunt went to the apartment to water the plants but failed to notice anything suspicious.

When Plamenova's relatives started trying to call her, they got short messages sent by Dimitrov saying that she was well but wanted to be left alone and would return in 2-3 days.

The police learned that the 21-year-old girl had last had contact with him and placed the block he lived in under surveillance.

Dimitrov came out to throw out a bag containing latex gloves and keys.

He was later arrested and made a full confession.

The verdict can be appealed or protested within 15 days before the Varna Appellate Court.
