Administrative Court Sofia City (ACSC) has confirmed the legality of the October 23 mayoral elections in Sofia.

In a Thursday ruling, ACSC upheld the appointment of Yordanka Fandakova as Sofia Mayor for a second term in office.

Fandakova, who ran on the ticket of center-right ruling party GERB, scored a victory at the first round of the mayoral elections in the capital.

The cancellation of the October 23 vote was requested by the Greens party, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) and the Party for People from the Nation, who cited numerous irregularities in the election process.

ACSC admitted that the elections had been marred by violations, including the extended voting hours, the formation of polling stations with a disproportionately high number of voters, the long queues formed in front of polling stations, the presence of 11 protocols drafted ex officio due to the loss of the original documents, etc., but nevertheless said that the detected flaws could not entail significant changes in election results.

The court noted that simultaneous voting requires a more detailed legal framework by Parliament so as to avoid the complications in the election process.

ACSC' decision is not final and can be appealed before the Supreme Administrative Court (VAS).
