At least 49 people have been killed in Baghdad on Thursday and more than 160 have been wounded as coordinated bomb attacks hit the Iraqi capital.

A total of 13 locations have been attacked, including al-Amil in the south of the city and Halawi and Karrada closer to the centre, BBC informs, citing the local Interior Ministry. The blasts occurred mostly in Shiite areas.

The wave of attacks came amid fears of rising sectarian tensions as the unity government faces internal divisions.

Iraq's Shiite-led government has issued a warrant for the arrest of Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi on charges that he plotted to kill other government officials. Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has demanded that Kurdish authorities hand over the Sunni Arab leader
