Bulgarian Tax Chief Praises Helicopter Experiment

The unusual practice of mapping luxury real estate properties across Bulgaria from the skies via a helicopter has resulted in the country's National Revenue Agency collecting BGN 20 M more in tax money.

In an interview for the TV 7 private channel on Monday, National Revenue Agency head Krasimir Stefanov described the helicopter raids as one of his institution's most successful campaigns over the past few years.

The Bulgarian tax authorities launched the unusual helicopter operation in 2010.

According to Krasimir Stefanov, 2011 has been more successful in terms of tax revenue than the previous year. At the end of November, the agency reached BGN 11.4 B, a BGN 715 M increase year on year, he pointed out.

The results are due to the agency's more efficient work, as the economy has not changed significantly since 2010, Stefanov believes.

Stefanov reiterated that Finance Minister Simeon Djankov now gives a positive assessment to the National Revenue Agency. He referred to comments made by Finance Minister Simeon Djankov several months ago that he may be fired if the agency fails to provide sufficient result in tax revenue collection.
