A 29-year old suspect has been detained by the police in Bulgaria's Sofia in relation with the series of car arsons in capital.

The man has a criminal record and lives in Sofia's Mladost residential district, the Bulgarian National Radio informs. It was in Mladost where the first vehicles were set on fire in November.

No signals have been registered for car arsons in Sofia overnight on Friday. For the past several weeks, a total of 44 vehicles were set ablaze in several districts across the city.

On Tuesday evening, Sofia police reported detaining a 33-year-old man with the nickname 'Kukata' ('the Hook') as a potential suspect. Less than an hour after the arrest, five cars were torched in Sofia's Student city.

On Thursday, it was announced that Bulgaria's National Sate Security Agency (DANS) is already working on the recent series of car arsons.

Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov has suggested that the car burnings could be linked to organized crime, which was also to blame for the overall destabilization of the capital.
