Matthaeus Loses Motorsport Race to Bulgarian-German Pop Star

Bulgarian pop singer Lucy Diakovska, a star from from German girl band No Angels, scored a victory over Lothar Matthaeus, Bulgaria's former national football coach, at the Race of Champions motorsport event.

The 2011 edition of the international contest was held on December 3-4 at D?sseldorf's ESPRIT arena.

Diakovska and Matthaeus faced each other in the celebrity race in Volkswagen Up's.

The ladies team also included actress Natalia W?rner and TV host Verena Wriedt.

The football legend's teammates were TV hosts Oliver Pocher and Joachim Winterscheidt.

The quickest to master the 60 hp of VW's Up! was Lucy, who claimed victory over the former Germany midfielder.

"I am glad I beat the boys! I can imagine that Oli and Lothar find football scores more important but people in sports don't like losing. The race was very funny," Lucy said after her triumph.

Sebastien Ogier overcame eight-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Tom Kristensen in the final to become Champion of Champions, while Team Germany took their fifth consecutive Nations Cup victory thanks to Formula One stars Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.

Sofia's Arena Armeetz sports hall will host a similar race on Wednesday.
