The stretch of Trakia highway between Nova Zagora and Yambol has been built with illegally obtained materials, said Kolyo Milev, Mayor-Elect of the South-Eastern Bulgarian city of Sliven.

Sega daily quoted Milev as saying that Greek Aktor, which is building Lot 3 of the highway, is to blame for the violation.

Aktor won the tender for the construction of the highway stretch between Nova Zagora and Yambol in June 2010 after placing the lowest bid of BGN 111 645 000, VAT excluded.

Sliven's new Mayor accused the Greek firm of using aggregates from an an illegal quarry located near the village of Chokoba in the Sliven Municipality

A spot check conducted on a tip-off from last week showed that materials from the illegal quarry were being excavated and transported to be used for the completion of the highway section.

The excavation processes have been suspended and Aktor has been issued an offense protocol and has been ordered to conduct recultivation works on the spot.

Bulgaria's Ministry of Environment and Water will be notified about the matter.
