German ambassador to Bulgaria Mathias Hoepfner and Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova opened Sunday morning a German-style Christmas market in downtown Sofia.

Settled in the small park between the House of Parliament and Sofia University, the market will feature 22 traditional wooden houses selling Christmas cookies, drinks and presents.

A puppet show, roundabouts and school shows will be featured for the entertainment of kids.

In addition a Bulgarian Christian Orthodox priest and a German protestant pastor will hold sermons on Sundays.

From December 1, remaining days until Christmas will be counted, with a famous person opening a window of the houses on each day.

Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov has been invited on St. Nicholas' Day, December 6, and president-elect Rosen Plevneliev on St. Ignatius' Day, December 20.

The Sofia Christmas market is sponsored not only by the embassy of Germany, but also by a number of German companies working in Bulgaria and has as one of its goals to popularize German culture.

Proceeds from the Weihnachtsmarkt will be revealed on Christmas Eve, December 24, and will go for food and equipment for Sofia's municipal soup kitchens.
