Bulgaria's controversial far-right Ataka (Attack) party will face its political death if it does not change the course chosen by its leader, Volen Siderov, according to the formation's former MP Kamen Petkov.

"The only way for Ataka to continue its existence is to substitute its leader. A parliamentary group that has no respect for its leader cannot hope for a bright future," according to Petkov, one of the six Ataka lawmakers who have left the party's parliamentary group since the 2009 elections.

It is not Siderov but his estranged wife, Kapka Siderova, who has been the strong figure in the nationalist party all along, the now independent MP claimed in an interview for the Nova TV private channel on Monday. He further claimed that the eccentric Ataka leader has left his wife because of his affair with a much younger woman – Ataka MP Denitsa Gadzheva.

Two days ago, Ataka expelled  Siderov's stepson, MEP Dimitar Stoyanov from the party, after Stoyanov recently requested Siderov's resignation. Rumors have it that Gadzheva is Stoyanov's former girlfriend.

On Sunday, Siderov officially stated that there has been a plot for a coup in the party and blamed his estranged wife and her son for participating in it. The nationalist leader has also stated that Prime Minister Boyko Borisov is involved in a plot to destroy his party.

"Volen (Siderov) is absolutely clueless about his current situation and is talking non-sense," Petkov commented on his former leader's conspiracy claims.
