Censorship and monopoly over the media are serious problems in Bulgaria, Slavi Binev, an unattached Bulgarian MEP, has stated in the European Parliament.

The Bulgarian MEP has told his colleagues about the Bulgarian media's issues with objectivity, independence and freedom of speech, dnevnik.bg informs.

Binev has approached the European Parliament concerning what he perceives as the model established by Bulgaria's PM Boyko Borisov to fully control the country's media, a press release from his office says.

According to Binev, a member of Bulgaria's controversial far-right Ataka (Attack) party, Bulgarian media outlets are being censored by the government and information is being filtered so that it can not reach the country's citizens.

TheĀ  MEP will seek a meeting with EU Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes on which he plans to explain the media situation in the Balkan state.

In May, Bulgaria, together with East Timor and India, was ranked 77th out of 196 countries in Freedom House's media freedom index, which is the worst result for an EU country.
