Romanian Tax Authorities Put Distraint on Nokia Factory

The Romanian National Tax Administration Agency (ANAF) has levied a distraint on Nokia factories in the village of Jucu, Cluj region, reports Adevarul.ro.

The distraint is on properties measuring 28,000 square meters including offices and factory units, to guarantee what ANAF claims to be USD 10 M worth of taxes due.

According to Romanian tax authorities, a check started in 2009 has reached the conclusion that Nokia has evaded taxes by requesting tariff exemption for imports from non-EU countries such as China, Taiwan and the USA.

"This is a preventive measure that does not imperil the activity of the company in Romania," said ANAF's director Sorin Blejnar.

Nokia has opened its Jucu factory in 2008, moving from Bochum, Germany.

In September however, the Finnish cell phone producer announced that it will have to close down the facility, leaving more than 2,000 to look for jobs.
