Bulgaria's Part-Time Employees Eager to Work Longer - Eurostat

The percentage of Bulgaria's part-time employees who are willing to work longer hours is among the highest in the EU, according to Eurostat.

A total of 39% of the Bulgaria's part-time employees wish to work more hours and available to do so, which places the country fourth behind Latvia (65%), Greece (49%) and Spain (46%). In all these four member states, the shares of employed persons working part-time are relatively low.

Bulgaria's part-time employees aged 15-74 constitute a mere 2.3% of the country's total employment, the lowest percentage among all EU nations. The Balkan country's potential additional labor force is estimated at 9.0%, which places it second in the bloc behind Italy (11.6%).

The smallest proportion of part-time employees willing to work longer hours was found in the Netherlands (3%), where part-time working is most common, followed by Belgium (4%), the Czech Republic and Luxembourg (both 10%).

In the EU27, there were 41.3 million persons working part-time in 2010, of which three quarters were women. Among those employed part-time, 8.5 million, or 21%, wished to work more hours, were available to do so1 and can therefore be considered to be underemployed. The share of part-time workers who are underemployed was higher for men (27%) than for women (19%).
