Bulgaria's Average Wage Down 0.9% in Q3 2011

The average monthly wages and salaries in Bulgaria in the third quarter of 2011 decreased by 0,9% down to BGN 693, compared to the second quarter of the year.

The preliminary data was released Tuesday by the National Statisitcs Institue (NSI).

The average monthly wages and salaries of employees under labor contract in July, August and September 2011 were BGN 691, 683 and 704 respectively.

The highest decrease in wages and salaries were eported in the real estate - 11.1% and financial and insurance activities – 6.2% sectors.

The highest increase in average monthly wages and salaries in third quarter of 2011, as compared to the second quarter of 2011, was observed in agriculture, forestry and fishing - 5.5% and in the construction sector – 1.9%.

Compared to the third quarter of 2010, the average monthly wages and salaries in the third quarter of 2011 rose by 8.6%. The highest growth rates were recorded in the following sectors: information and communication - 21.4% and professional, scientific and technical activities – 21.1%.

The economic activities with the highest average monthly wages and salaries in the third quarter of 2011 were: information and communication – BGN 1 558, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply – BGN 1 429, financial and insurance activities - BGN 1 340.

The lowest wages and salaries were recorded in: administrative and support service activities BGN 438, and accommodation and food service activities – BGN 458.

In comparison with the same period of last year, the average monthly wages and salaries in the public sector grew by 3.0%, while in private sector - by 10.7%.

According to NSI preliminary data at the end of September 2011, the number of employees under labor contract decreased by 10.7 thousands or 0.5% as compared to the end of June 2011, and reached 2.19 millions.

The highest decrease was observed in the following sectors: real estate - 13.2%, and accommodation and food service activities – 12.7%.

The highest increase of employees was recorded in sectors: agriculture, forestry and fishing - 2.8% and "water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities – 1.6%.

In the structure of employees by economic activities the biggest relative share of employees was in manufacturing - 22.7% and in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles - 17.8%.

At the end of September 2011 as compared to September 2010, the number of employees under labor contract declined by 9.3 thousands or 0.4%.

The highest decrease in absolute figures was observed in economic sectors: manufacturing - 17.5 thousands, construction - 12.4 thousands and wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles - 11.0 thousands.

In percentages the highest decrease was in construction - 8.6%, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply - 5.6% and manufacturing - 3.4%.
