Foreign Minister, Nikolay Mladenov, had spoken with his Brazilian counterpart and had secured cooperation on Brazil's part in establishing contact with legendary Bulgarian weightlifter, Galabin Boevski.
The news was reported Friday by Boevski's lawyer, Konstantin Simeonov, who says no one from Bulgaria had yet been in touch with Boevski.
Currently, Bulgaria is represented in Brazil only by an honorary consul, who will be the person to establish contact, according to Simeonov.
Galabin Boevski, 36, a Bulgarian Olympic weightlifting champion, was arrested on October 25th for possession of 9 kg of cocaine at the Guarulhos Airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The drug was found hidden in special secret compartments inside his suitcase.
Simeonov further announced that a Bulgarian attorney is leaving for Brazil in just days to work on the case.
He stated he found it hard to believe the weightlifter would carry illegal drugs during his very first trip to Brazil, adding he learned about going there just 10 days prior to the arrest. The announced 9 kg of cocaine included the weight of the suitcases and actually turned out to be about 2.
Boevski's daughter Sara, who was traveling with him, says the suitcases in question were purchased just a day prior to their departure for Bulgaria and both were unaware of the existence of the cocaine.
The lawyer denies reports the former Olympic champion had staggering debt and had made full confessions to the Brazilian authorities.
Several days ago, the Bulgarian Trud (Labor) daily reported that according to the Trade Register, the former weightlifter, who now owns several of Sofia's most upscale fitness facilities, had shares in four companies, whose debt was listed at BGN 2.14 by December 31, 2010, while the assets were BGN 1.83 M.
