A female doctor from the emergency center in Bulgaria's capital Sofia has been fired for going shopping in the mall in an ambulance transporting a woman suffering from possible heart attack.
Kalina Kioseva, cited by the Bulgarian Standart (Standard) daily, says she called the 112 emergency hotline on October 24, after her 66-year-old mother fainted at home.
The ambulance, with the female doctor, Diyana Radeva, arrived after a 40-munite wait. Upon examining the patient, the medical worker asked to be served coffee and cigarettes. She calmed down relatives, who insisted for the ambulance to depart ASAP, with the words: "Wait honey, wait a little, so that I can finish my cigarette."
Kalina says the doctor was non-stop checking her clothes and even asked how much her boots cost. After learning that the young woman works at the National Film Center, the ER doctor inquired if she can get a job in the movie industry since her current salary was low and her childhood dream had been to become a movie star.
When the ambulance with mother and daughter finally left, the doctor asked the driver to stop at a shopping mall so that she could pay her cell phone bill. She spent a long time inside, making Kalina even more nervous and forcing her to go look for her.
"I found her inside a fitting room, trying on a blouse," the shocked daughter says.
Kioseva had filed a claim with the Head Secretary of the Health Ministry, the Head of the Sofia Regional Health Inspectorate, the Chair of the Ethics Committee of the Bulgarian Doctors Union, the Director of the National Health Insurance Fund, and the Association for Protection of Patients' Rights.
Radeva had been fired as result of the claim, the Health Ministry told Standart.
