Italy Becomes 1st EU State to Resume Libya Flights

Italy has become the first EU member country to renew its commercial flights to Libya after  the the overthrow of late strongman Muammar Gaddafi, the Italian Foreign Ministry has revealed.

Italy's Alitalia has become the first EU airline carrier to have re-started  its flights to Libya. Scheduled flights between Rome and Tripoli will be carried out four times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday).

"Italy has become the first EU state to resume commercial flights to Libya, which demonstrates our paramount role in this country and wonderful level of cooperation that we have established with Libya's new authorities," Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said, as cited by RIA Novosti.

Frattini thanked Alitalia for its swift resumption of service to Tripoli.

NATO lifted the no-flight zone in Libya on Monday, October 31, seven months after its mission in the North African country kicked off.
