The 'Bulgarian Christmas' charity, which was set up by outgoing President Georgi Parvanov in 2002 to give sick childs a hope, will be fully supported by his successor.

"I personally support the "Bulgarian Christmas" charity because I have seen its concrete results. During my travels around the country I visited a number of hospitals and doctors often told me: "This was funded by the "Bulgarian Christmas"," Rosen Plevneliev, the newly elected president of Bulgaria, said in an interview for 24 Hours daily.

"Obviously this is an initiative that has helped many people and will surely continue. But we should try to find the most adequate form to carry it out," he added.

The charity collects funds each year to pay for the treatment of sick children, and for buying medical equipment for children hospitals and clinics.

To date, 'Bulgarian Christmas' has raised nearly BGN 16 M. This has enabled the medical treatment of almost 400 children, and ambulances donated to over 90 childrens' clinics.

Last year, despite the economic downturn, Bulgarians donated BGN 1,24 M.

Outgoing President Parvanov, who has been the charity's patron throughout the years, has attributed the success of the Bulgarian Christmas to its transparency, honesty and noble cause.
