Bulgaria's ruling center-right party managed to conquer the country's ancient capital of Veliko Tarnovo, according to exit polls.

Daniel Panov, candidate of the ruling GERB party, defeated in the second round Nikolay Ilchev, candidate of the Bulgaran Socialist Party, after garnering 53.7% of the votes.

The party also managed to retain their power in several towns considered until recently as strongholds of the Socialists, including Stara Zagora, Vratsa and Blagoevgrad. Borisov's nominees made a breakthrough there and turned upside down the sentiments of the electorate four year ago, during the local elections in 2007.

Pernik's Socialist mayor Rositsa Yanakieva was toppled by the candidate of the ruling party GERB Irena Sokolova.
