Killed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's son Seif al-Islam has stated he can prove his innocence in court proceedings, said Hague prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo.

Moreno-Ocampo has confirmed that Seif al-Islam is in indirect contact through intermediaries with the Hague International Criminal Court, as reported earlier.

According to him, Seif al-Islam has said it is in his interest to be tried at the court, in order to prove his innocence from crimes allegedly committed by his father's regime.

Earlier this week, an official from the rebel Libyan National Transitional Council has announced that Gaddafi's son has offered to surrender to the rebels and be delivered to the ICC, which has issued an arrest warrant for him.

According to reports, Seif al-Islam is hiding in the Libyan desert somewhere near the border with Niger.

Prosecutor Ocampo has said that the Gaddafi son was informed that if he attempts to flee by air the area, his plane will be intercepted.

He clarified that the Hague court does not attempt to reach a deal with him, but just wants to inform him that he is to be tried for war crimes.
