Libya's slain strongman Muammar Gaddafi has died from a gunshot wound, one of the doctors who carried out his post-mortem examination has confirmed, without sharing details.

The examination was done by a team of doctors at a morgue in Misrata late on Saturday, Sky News informs.

Gaddafi's body would be brought back to a cold room in a shopping centre in the city, local officials have revealed. The corpse has been on public display there and hundreds of residents have lined up to catch a glimpse of it or film it with their cell phones.

Libya's Transitional National Council is expected to declare liberation on Sunday,  a move that will start the clock for elections due to take place within eight months.

Gaddafi, 69, ruled Libya with an iron fist for almost 42 years. The demise of his regime came after a nine-month civil war struggle. Libya's long-serving strongman  was toppled by a popular uprising on August 22, 2011

Late on Saturday, Seif al-Islam,the  late Libyan dictator's most powerful son, vowed to take revenge for his father's death.

"We are continuing resistance. I am in Libya, I am alive and free and willing to fight to the end and take revenge," Seif al-Islam declared in an alleged statement aired by Syria-based Alrai TV channel.

Earlier, a website of Gaddafi's supporters  posted a statement that Seif al-Islam had been named an heir to the Libyan strongman and is now in and charge of the forces fighting the Transitional National Council.
