Late Libyan dictator's most powerful son, Seif al-Islam, is heading south from Sirte towards the border with Niger, a senior Transitional National Council military official stated Friday.
Seif al-Islam is reportedly travelling in a convoy of three armored vehicles in an effort to escape the TNC forces, Abdul Majid Mlegta has said, according to international media.
In September, dozens of Gaddafi loyalists, including one of his sons, Saadi, succeeded in escaping to Niger and are currently sheltered in the capital Niamey.
Even though Libya's interim government has demanded that they be returned, Niger has resisted, saying Tripoli could send investigators if it wanted to question them.
Shortly after Sirte was overwhelmed by the rebel forces, and Muammar Gaddafi was captured and died of his wounds earlier on Thursday, Seif al-Islam was believed to still be at large in the southern Libya desert.
Late on Thursday, reports emerged that Seif al-Islam had been arrested by rebel forces.
