Former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi has died of his wounds that he received during his capture by the rebel forces, unconfirmed reports say.

"He's captured. He's wounded in both legs ... He's been taken away by ambulance," Abdel Majid, a rebel commander, announced as Gaddafi was caught, as cited by international media.

Shortly after that, however, reports emerged that the former Libyan dictator died of his wounds.

National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters earlier that Gaddafi was captured and wounded in both legs at dawn on Thursday as he tried to flee in a convoy which NATO warplanes attacked.

"He was also hit in his head," the official said. "There was a lot of firing against his group and he died." There was no independent confirmation of his remarks.

Libyan state TV and Al Jazeera sources also report that Gaddafi was killed in Sirte.

Gaddafi was captured after the Libyan rebels overwhelmed his hometown and last bastion Sirte on Thursday, October 20, 2011, after a civil war that lasted nine months.
