A group of Roma citizens have assaulted the emergency department medical staff at a hospital in the Southeastern Bulgarian town of Sliven.

The incident began around 8:00 pm on Wednesday and continued all the way through the wee hours of Thursday, Darik radio reports.

According to the "Dr Ivan Seliminski" hospital's deputy director, Dr Hrisant Hrisantov, the Roma were verbally assaulting the medical staff, spit on the walls and even tried to physically attack some of the physicians. The medical staff called the police on two occasions.

The enraged Roma, who did not have health insurance, were reportedly unsatisfied with the medical service they received.

Members of the Sliven hospital's medical staff have revealed that they are often the target of assaults like the one on Wednesday and that they are deeply frightened and concerned.
