Libyan Transitional National Council fighters are reported to have captured toppled dictator Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte, believed to be his loyalists' last serious pocket of resistance.

The final assault began around 8 a.m. and took approximately 90 minutes, reporters at the scene have stated. The new national flag has already been hoisted by interim government fighters above the center of the city.

"Our forces control the last neighborhood in Sirte," Hassan Draoua, a member of Libya's interim Transitional National Council, declared in Tripoli on Thursday, as cited by international media.

"The whole of Sirte is now liberated," Abdel Sallam Jadallah, an anti-Gaddafi commander in Sirte, told Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera also reports that one of Gaddafi's cousins, Ahmed Ibrahim, was arrested trying to flee Sirte in a convoy. Ibrahim was responsible for education under the Gaddafi regime.
