Bulgarian PM Borisov and EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn have opened a new road junction on Trakiya Highway constructed with EU money.
The Stara Zagora Road Junction, which is located near the southern city of Stara Zagora is part of Lot 2 of Trakiya Highway, a road that links Sofia to the Black Sea city of Burgas.
The new road junction is a cloverleaf interchange with a diameter of 900 meters; it was completed with EU funding seven months ahead of schedule. It is located at the intersection of Trakiya Highway, which runs in the east-west direction, and the north-south road from Dimitrovgrad to Stara Zagora.
"Today's ceremony is a demonstration for EU Commissioner Hahn that Bulgaria is doing construction projects transparently and timely," Bulgarian PM Borisov said, while also urging the European Commission to "grant money faster so that we can build faster."
"We are launching this road junction ahead of schedule so that we can provide easier passage during the winter months," Bulgaria's newly appointed Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova declared at the opening.
Commissioner Hahn praised the Bulgarian authorities for certain EU-funded infrastructure projects such as the construction of Trakiya Highway and the Sofia Metro that he described as "best examples" about the ability of new EU member states to manage large infrastructure projects.
