Bulgaria Aims at 36% University Graduates by 2020

A total of 36% of all Bulgarians should be university graduates by 2020, according to the country's Education Minister Sergey Ignatov.

Several days ago, the European Commission recommended that 40% of Bulgaria's population should have university diplomas by 2020, the Minister has revealed, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency. However, Ignatov has admitted this goal would be impossible to achieve.

According to the European Commission's data, a total of 23.2% of all Bulgarians currently have university education, a 1.5% increase as compared with 2004.

"We usually reckon that we have a lot of universities and students, but it has turned out this is not exactly the case," Ignatov has said. The Minister believes his country would have difficulties in increasing its number of university graduates due to its demographical problems.

The percentage of Bulgaria's state budget spent on education should be increased in 2012, Ignatov has declared, but without mentioning any concrete numbers. Currently, about 3% of the country's GDP goes for education.
