Bulgarians need to win back esteem for themselves and their country, stated Stefan Danailov, vice-presidential hopeful for the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party.

The classic Bulgarian film and theater star was nominated by the socialists to be the running mate of their candidate for October 23 presidential elections, PES MEP Ivailo Kalfin.

"I want Bulgarians to reclaim their dignity as people who live in a just and worthy country, who can hold their heads up in Europe and the rest of the world," said Danailov Saturday in an interview for Darik Radio.

The socialist stated that the effectiveness institution of Vice-President in Bulgaria is vastly dependent on the character of the person who occupies it and vowed to be a pro-active VP if elected.

"It all depends on whether you're ready and willing to aid the President in his work," clarified Danailov, adding he sees his potential in contributing to initiatives relating to civic rights and culture.

The actor said he would actively work to overcome what he saw as an attitude of "anti-culture, a bellicose boorishness that we see becoming a model" in Bulgaria.

Recent polls have the Kalfin-Danailov tandem coming out second before favorites for the elections, ruling center-right GERB candidates Rosen Plevneliev and Margarita Popova.
