Smoke Bomb Thrown at Bulgarian Parliamentary Building

An unidentified male threw a smoke bomb in front of the Bulgarian National Assembly building in downtown Sofia and left a suspiciously looking sack nearby.

According to a press release issued by the country's Interior Ministry, there have been no explosives discovered in the sack.

After the smoke bombs were thrown, lawmakers and journalists in the located in the parliamentary building panicked, while dozens of police cars were immediately sent to the place of the accident. A man allegedly in his late 30-ies has been apprehended by police officers as a suspected perpetrator.

Witness accounts say the man had two accomplices who ran away, the BGNES news agency reports.

Late on Thursday, it was announced that large amounts of trotyl, a dangerous explosive substance, have been discovered in front of the block of flats where Penko Atanasov, a lawmaker from the oppositional left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party.
