Natural gas, hot water, and central heating have new, higher prices in Bulgaria, effective Saturday.

Natural gas now costs BGN 594.37 for 1 000 cubic meters, which is nearly 7% more, while heating is up over 12%.

The decision for the price hike was made during the week by the State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation, DKEVR.

Instead of the usual practice to hold open meetings when prices are discussed, the members of the energy watchdog called a Consultative Council, which is held behind closed doors and includes representatives of the State supplier Bulgargaz, of DKEVR and of several NGOs.

The reasons for the natural gas price increase are said to be the higher prices of oil on global markets, higher prices asked by Russian suppliers, and losses for Bulgaragaz over the USD-BGN exchange rate.

When natural gas goes up more than 5%, heating prices must be adjusted accordingly.

In the capital Sofia, hot water is going to cost over 8% more during this winter season. The only city to enjoy lower prices of heating is Veliko Tarnovo, but there the value of the service is the highest. The city's heating utility is not a direct client of Bulgargaz – it purchases from the local gas distributor.
