Bulgaria Strikes Gold at European Water Lifesaving Championship

Bulgaria's national water life saving team at the Bulgarian Red Cross showed an excellent performance at the 2011 European Surf Life Saving Championships in Alicante, Spain.

On Sunday, Maria Zlatkova won gold at the 400M Surf Race, an open water event.

The team race, which started on September 15, will continue until September 23.

The first three will secure quota places for the 2012 World Life Saving Championships in Adelaide, South Australia, scheduled for November 7-18.

The Water Life Saving Service (WLSS) at the Bulgarian Red Cross was established in 1964 and has been a member of the International Life Saving Federation (ILSF) since 1966.

Bulgarian teams have been multiple champions at world and European Water Life Saving Championships organized by the ILSF.

In Bulgaria, WLSS trains an estimated 700 - 800 lifeguards per year and organizes a variety of training courses, including the the Young Lifeguard courses for children aged 12-16 with outstanding swimming skills.
