Croatia has moved one step closer to EU membership as the COREPER II reached an agreement on the text of the country's Accession Treaty.

At the Wednesday meeting, Ambassadors from the 27 member States finalized a nearly two-year period of drafting the Accession Treaty with Croatia, the Polish EU Presidency said in a statement.

Croatia, which applied for the EU membership in 2003, will be the second former Yugoslav republic to join the bloc after Slovenia, which became a member in 2004.

Wednesday's decision will be followed by the opinion of the European Commission and consent of the European Parliament and final decision of the Council.

The Accession Treaty is to be signed in December 2011, with Croatia expected to join the European Union on 1 July 2013 after the ratification process is concluded in all member states and Croatia.
