Unknown individuals have broken into the Bulgarian village of Voditsa's municipal building and have made a failed attempt to steal USD 800 000, an unexpected inheritance, given to the village and its "Otets Paisiy" school by American Helen Rincker Ashley.

The wannabe-robbers cracked open the local post office's cash box, which is situated in the municipal building, but found nothing inside, as the money was, of course, kept in a bank.

Nothing else has been stolen, either, the Dnevnik daily reports.

Ashley's will is taken care of by the CAF America Foundation and their Bulgarian partner, Bulgarian Charities Aid Foundation.

The donor had been born in 1916 and was a resident of Scottsdale, AZ. She passed away in 2009 and left a will, according to which she wanted all her assets sold, and the establishment of a foundation under her name with 75% of its funds given to Voditsa. The most likely motive for the American lady to pick the village is her distant Bulgarian origins, dating from the 19th century.
