Bulgarian Former Rightist MP to Run For President

The chair of Bulgaria's small United People's Party Maria Kapon will be the party's candidate for upcoming October 23 presidential elections.

Mid-August Kapon's party announced a pre-election coalition with supporters of Kasim Dal, the ousted long-time vice-chair of ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms for the local elections set at the same date.

Kapon's running mate for the presidential elections is yet to be determined, as are the coalition's nominees for mayors and town councillors, who will be tabled for each of Bulgaria's municipalities.

The United People's Party is not parliamentary represented. Kapon has been chairing it since its creation in 2008.

An economist by degree and profession, Maria Kapon was a MP in the 2005-9 Bulgarian Parliament for the rightist Union of Democratic Forces, until she left the Union to create UPP.
