Bulgaria's Industrial Production Up, Construction Down 07/11 Y/Y

Preliminary data, released Thursday by the Bulgarian National Statistics Institute, NSI, showed that the seasonally adjusted Industrial Production Index was up by 1.5% in July 2011, compared to June.

In July 2011, the work day adjusted Industrial Production Index rose by 6.2%, compared to the same month of 2010.

In July 2011, compared to June 2011, the seasonally adjusted Industrial Production Index in the mining and quarrying industry increased by 11.3%, and by 9.1% in the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning, while in the manufacturing sector it decreased by 0.6%.

The most significant decreases of production in the manufacturing sector were registered in the manufacture of textiles by 16.6%, in the repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 12.3%, in the manufacture of tobacco products by 8.3%, in the manufacture of paper and paper products by 4.6%.

There was and increase in the manufacture of beverages by 5.2%, in the manufacture of basic metals by 5.0%, in the manufacture of food products and in the manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment by 3.6%.

On annual basis, in July 2011 , the Industrial Production Index, calculated from work day adjusted data in the mining and quarrying industry grew by 10.3%, in the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 7.4% and in the manufacturing sector - by 5.9%.

Increases were registered in the production of intermediate goods by 9.6%, in the production of investment goods by 5.6% and in the production of energy by 4.7%.

According to the preliminary data of the NSI, in July 2011, the Index of Production in the Construction sector, calculated on the base of seasonally adjusted data was 0.9% below the level of the previous month.

In July 2011, work day adjusted data showed a decrease by 13.2% in the construction sector, compared to the same month of 2010.

In July 2011, construction production was below the level of the previous month.. The Index of production of building construction, calculated from the seasonally adjusted data, fell by 1.6%, while the production of civil engineering showed an increase by 0.2%.

On annual basis, in July 2011, the decrease of production in construction, calculated from work day adjusted data, was determined mainly from the drop by 19.4% in the civil engineering, while the building construction decreased by 7.9 %.

Also in July 2011, the turnover in Retail Trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles, at constant prices fell by 0.7% compared to the previous month.

In July 2011, the work day adjusted turnover in Retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles, declined by 2.8% in comparison with the same month of the previous year.

In July 2011, the turnover compared to the previous month increased by 0.5% in the section Retail Sale of Food, Beverages and Tobacco, by 0.1% in Dispensing Chemist; Retail Sale of Medical and Orthopedic Goods, Cosmetic and Toilet Articles.

Negative change was observed in three economic activities: Retail Sale of Computers, Peripheral Units and Software; Telecommunications Equipment – down by 2.0%, in the Retail Sale of Audio and Video Equipment; Hardware, Paints and Glass; Electrical Household Appliances – down by 1.4% and in the Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel down by 0.2%.

The turnover in July 2011, compared to the same month of 2010, grew in Dispensing Chemist; Retail Sale of Medical and Orthopedic Goods, Cosmetic and Toilet Articles up by 3.9%. A decline was registered in the Retail Sale of Audio and Video Equipment; Hardware, Paints and Glass; Electrical Household Appliances – down by 8.2%, in the Retail Sale of Computers, Peripheral Units and Software; Telecommunications Equipment – down by 5.5%, in the Retail Sale of Textiles, Clothing, Footwear and Leather Goods – down by 3.4%, in the Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel – down by 1.8% and in the Retail Sale of Food, Beverages and Tobacco – down by 0.3%.

Seasonal adjustment is a statistical method, which eliminates the seasonal component of time series and it is particularly suitable for longterm comparisons and analysis of the data.

Work day adjustment is an adjustment for variations in monthly data, caused by calendar effects, different number of calendar and work days in the month, and national holydays - for example the presence of more days off in May could contribute to the decline in the production in some activities.
