Bulgarian MEP and socialist presidential candidate Ivaylo Kalfin has said that his running mate for the October 23 elections will most likely be announced by the end of the week.

In order for this to happen, the vice presidential nomination must be approved by the National Council of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), Kalfin said Tuesday during a visit in the southern city of Pazardzhik.

He also stated that the forthcoming elections were highly likely to include run-offs, which he said would be a close race, with high odds of success for the ticket of BSP.

According to sources close to the matter, invitations have already been extended to left-wing MPs Korneliya Ninova and Meglena Plugchieva, to which they are to respond by Thursday.

A publication of Bulgarian 24 Hours Daily claims that Kalfin has expressed a preference for businessman Petar Kanev as a running mate.

BSP leader Sergey Stanishev will have the final say on the vice presidential runner, the article reveals further.

BSP's ticket is to be officially presented on 11 September.
