A strong 7.1 Richter scale magnitude quake has hit Alaska's Aleutian Islands at 1:55 am local time on Friday, resulting in a tsunami warning issued by local authorities.

The 7.1 magnitude quake hit the Aleutian Islands, some 1600 km (1000 miles) away from Anchorage. It struck about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

"A Tsunami Warning means that all coastal residents in the warning area who are near the beach or in low-lying regions should move immediately inland to higher ground and away from all harbors and inlets including those sheltered directly from the sea," the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.
