A dead dolphin in an advanced stage of decomposition has been discovered near the southern Bulgarian resort town of Sozopol, the bTV private channel has reported.

The discovery took place just a day after police officers arrived in the Coral vacation villags, also on Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast, to investigate the case another dead dolphin, allegedly with multiple shot wounds. According to the police, there was no evidence of fouled play, even though witnesses stated with certainty they saw gun shots.

On Thursday, Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov declared he had already ordered an investigation into the case.

Since the end of July, animal cruelty has been considered a crime in Bulgaria to be punished by jail time or probation. The Black Sea dolphin is an endangered species and murdering one would result in 5 years behind bars for the perpetrator and a fine between BGN 5 000 and BGN 20 000.

It has not been announced what caused the death of the dolphin found on Friday near Sozopol. A total of 11 dolphin carcasses have been reported as discovered on Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast, bTV points out.
