Libya will accept a new constitution and hold elections within the next 18 months, Mustafa Abdel Jalil, head of the country's Transitional National Council, has promised.

Speaking at the "Friends of Libya" summit in Paris, Jalil declared will build a society full of tolerance and respect for the rule of law, BBC reports.

"We have to make sure that we fulfil our side of the deal. We must have security in Libya. Tolerance and forgiveness must be promoted. The state of law must be respected," Jalil declared.

Libya's interim leaders have outlined a transition period of about 20 months, Guma al-Gamaty, the representative of the representative of the rebel-led council in Britain, has told BBC radio.

During the "Friends of Libya" meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declared he would work in order to get an immediate UN mission on the ground in Libya as the North African country is still in a civil war between dictator Muammar Gaddafi's forces and rebels.
