The first victim of Hurricane Irene has been reported in North Carolina, as the storm blew a tree limb onto a man walking in a rural area of Nash County.

The hurricane remains a "large and dangerous" storm as it moves up the east coast, US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said at a news conference, as cited by the BBC.

On Saturday, Hurricane Irene slammed into the coast of North Carolina near Cape Lookout with Category 1-force winds of 137 km/h (85 mph).

Hurricane warnings for the next 48 hours have been issued for North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, coastal Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

More than 2 million people were told to move to safer places, and New York City ordered the nation's biggest subway system shut down for the first time because of a natural disaster.
