The raging Hurricane Irene has now slammed into the coast of North Carolina near Cape Lookout with Category 1-force winds of 137 km/h (85 mph).

The densely populated US east coast now faces flooding and power outages.

Hurricane warnings for the next 48 hours have been issued for North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, coastal Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

More than 2 million people were told to move to safer places, and New York City ordered the nation's biggest subway system shut down for the first time because of a natural disaster.

After North Carolina, the storm leading edge arrived in the Washington area early Saturday with rain starting in the lower parts of the Chesapeake Bay and the beaches of Delaware, The Washington Post says.

The storm could be extremely dangerous and costly for a nation that recalls the destruction in 2005 from Hurricane Katrina, US President Barack Obama has pointed out.
