UN Prepared to Send Police Forces to Libya

The UN is prepared to send police forces to Libya, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced.

Ban Ki-moon voiced hope that good relations can be established between the African Union and the Libyan opposition Transitional National Council (TNC). He spoke during a video conference dedicated to Libya with the participation of the AU, EU, and the Arab League.

According to the Secretary General, the UN needs a joint, unified and coordinated plan, but decisions must be made by Libyan people. He applauded the UN Security Council's resolution to release USD 1.5 B in Libyan assets frozen in American banks to be used for humanitarian aid.

Meanwhile, Catherine Ashton Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy appealed to all countries in the Libyan conflict to restrain from repressions and comply with humanitarian and international duties related to human rights.

On their part, the African Union has called for "an all-inclusive transitional government" in Libya that would unite the rebels and members of Muammar Gaddafi's dictatorship, reiterating they cannot officially recognize the rebels.

News agencies report the overnight situation in Tripoli as calmer, but the country is facing a serious humanitarian crisis.

The decaying bodies of 200 people suspected of have died over the lack of adequate medical care were discovered in a hospital in south Tripoli. The hospital had been seized by pro-Gaddafi forces for days, stopping the entrance of Red Cross rescue teams.

It has been also reported that a convoy with six armored Mercedes' has crossed the border with Algeria from Libya. It remains unclear who traveled in the armored vehicles, but there are speculations the passengers included high-ranking Libyan government figures and even dictator Muammar Gaddafi himself.

On Friday, Libyan rebels declared they are very close to capturing the dictator.
