Gaddafi Troops Assault Libyan Rebels at Tripoli Airport, Tunisian Border

Heavy fighting between the loyalists of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi and Libya's anti-regime rebels has erupted at several new spots as the latter's successes over the past week have proven inconclusive.

Rebel forces are in a face-off against Gaddafi loyalists at Ras Ajdir, on the border between Libya and Tunisia, Al Jazeera has reported.

Meanwhile, even though the rebels are technically believed to be in control of all of Tripoli, subduing one by one the remaining pockets of resistance by the regime forces, new fighting has erupted in the capital as well.

Gaddafi loyalists have bombarded the airport in Tripoli, damaging a plane, following a firefight nearby, the Al Arabiya TV reported Friday afternoon.

"The city is under our control or more precisely under the control of the Libyan people, and Libyan youth. And this youth is being co-ordinated through a supreme committee for security," rebel spokesman Aref Ali Nayed has told the BBC World Service in spite of the reports of intense fighting around the airport in Tripoli.

In the east-central Libya, rebel forces are reported to be rallying up for a major offensive against Gaddafi's bastion Sirte.
