Hard fighting between Libyan rebels and forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi has been witnessed approximately 100 km (60 miles) outside Sirte, the dictator's town of birth, towards which the main focus of the fighting has moved.

Rockets falling could be heard in the area and smoke could be seen, according to a BBC reporter at the spot.

A force of around 1,000 Gaddafi loyalists were on the road ahead and were attacking, rebels have said. The rebels were firing their own Grad rockets in reply.

Libya's Transitional National Council believes that Gaddafi might have hidden in the desert areas between Sirte and Sabah. The council has already offered amnesty to any of Gaddafi's entourage who killed him and announced a reward worth more than USD 1 M for his capture.
