Libyan Rebels Strive to Get Gaddafi Alive to Put Him on 'Fair Trial'

Struggling Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, whose regime is about to crumble, has been promised a "fair trial" by the head of the rebels' National Transitional Council (NTC), Mustafa Abdel Jalil.

Speaking in a press conference in Benghazi Monday afternoon, just as the Libyan rebels are fighting to gain total control of Tripoli, Jalil vowed that the dictator would be treated according to law.

"But I have no idea how he will defend himself against the crimes he has committed against the Libyan people and the world," Jalil stated adding he hoped Col Muammar Gaddafi would be caught alive so he could face trial "in which the world will be witness to the biggest dictator in the world".

"My role after the fall of Gaddafi will continue, unless I lose control of the aspirations and goals," Jalil told journalists in Benghazi. "I expect the youths of Libya and the revolutionaries will be up to the responsibility."

The rebel leader further revealed that Gaddafi's captured sons, Mohammed and Saif al-Islam, are "under the control of the revolutionaries and are in safe places."

He also confirmed that the rebels were not aware of Gaddafi's locations, and that the Gaddafi loyalists still controlled parts of the country.

"We cannot say that the rebels are in full control... Bab al-Aziziya and the surrounding areas are still out of our control. We have no knowledge of Gaddafi being there, or whether he is still in or outside Libya," Jalil stated.

"The real moment of victory is when Gaddafi is captured," he declared further, adding that the plans of the Libyan National Transitional Council for the country's post-Gaddafi future could be found in their constitutional declaration.

Mustafa Abdel Jalil was Gaddafi's justice minister, but he defected to the rebels in February 2011 after seeing the shooting of civilians and quickly became leader of the transitional council.

Jalil did admit that he was concerned about revenge attacks being carried out by rebel fighters, and that some leaders of the various armed groups worried him.
