The accident in which a young driver shot a man dead and tried to commit suicide in Bulgaria's capital Sofia early on Monday was the result of a "love triangle", police authorities have revealed.

It was initially reported that the shooting resulted from an argument the two men had over a minor traffic accident.

However, it turned out the 22-year old shooter and the 20-year-old victim knew each other and had scheduled to meet on the busy boulevard intersection where the tragedy took place.

Both youngsters had gone out with the same lady, according to investigating police officers, as cited by Darik radio. The shooter is still in critical condition.

The accident took place at the intersection of the Bulgaria and Gotse Delchev boulevards in the capital. It is the same place at which Emil Kyulev, a banker and one of the richest men in Bulgaria, was shot and killed while driving his BMW sports utility vehicle on October 26, 2005

Bulgarian mafia boss of Syrian origin, Filip Naydenov, aka Fatik.was killed at the same intersection in an AK-47 raid in 2003.
