A traffic enforcement camera has been installed on a section of Sofia's ring road near the Boyana residential district to prevent drag races.
The device will function 24/7.
The number plate recognition system will detect traffic regulation breaches in both lanes whenever a passing vehicle exceeds the speed limit by 10 km/s.
A separate camera has been mounted right next to the traffic enforcement camera to keep at bay offenders attempting to damage or destroy the photo radar.
The device is also protected trough a connection to a security system.
Traffic police authorities in the capital say they hope to be able to install traffic cameras on other busy boulevards such as Rozhen and Vladimir Vazov and Street 202 by the end of the year.
These spots are popular gathering places for drivers of cars and motorcycles who carry out illegal speed trials, endangering the safety of other vehicles and passers-by.
