Bulgaria's Education Ministry has certified over 6 000 diplomas of students who just graduated from high school out of a total of 65 000 graduating seniors across the country.

This data shows that every 10th graduate is continuing his or her college studies abroad, according to a report of the Bulgarian Standart (Standard) daily. Bulgaria has no precise national statistics on the exact number of youth choosing to study abroad after graduating from high school, but the number of certified diplomas went up twice in the last two years.

According to the daily, most Bulgarian students favor Germany and Great Britain. UCAS – the UK organization accepting applications for colleges and universities lists the number of the 2011 candidates from Bulgaria at 2 337, which is by 300 more compared to last year (2 067 total in 2010). Some exodus is, however, expected in 2012 over plans of British universities to increase their fees two to three times.

The Netherlands are third as a favorite destination for Bulgarian students. The country started granting loans to the latter this year in the amount of their college fees or about EUR 1 670. The Dutch offer other financing options such as the opportunity for students to found companies with EU funds and use them for school projects all while paying their expenses with the revenues from the business.
