Laughing through Tears

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov lived to see his biography hitting the book shelves. True, this is a satirical biography, but it fits his image well. Who hasn't got a whiff of his forceful ways to enchant the audience?

The authors of the book, entitled "Me, Boyko" – screenwriters of a popular Bulgarian TV show – are apparently promoting the idea that the square-jawed ex-wrestler has enlivened the country's politics. And certainly play it safe as Borisov's humorous ways are the only thing both his fans and foes agree upon.

This time the plaudits won't be verging on sycophancy. They make good use of Borisov's entertaining flair for headlines and plain-spoken style, hopefully in a bid to hint that this may be far from enough to solve Bulgaria's problems.

"In this book I have said everything about everything. This earth ball here, which you see in the picture, I have created it with my own two hands. I created everything, you name it – oceans, continents, rivers, everything. From A to Z. I created te ball, cut the ribbon, but was all alone. There was even nobody to say "Congratulations". So I had to create some people. First I created Tsetso, then came all the rest... "

Somewhere in 1982, still a karate enthusiast far away from the pinnacle of political prowess, Borisov must have created Aleksei Petrov, a one-time business partner and current arch enemy, right?

What the main character of the book and its authors know, but won't admit, is that the average Bulgarian has long stopped laughing at his jokes.

Shouldn't Borisov worry more about this average Bulgarian than about his former business partner and head of the Octopus mafia Aleksei Petrov, whose name makes him bristle with rage?

No, because the upcoming election in the autumn will be funded by the black economy – drugs trafficking and excise goods smuggling.

This is a public secret.
