Bulgaria's Rice Production Tripled in 5 Years

Bulgaria's production of rice has been steadily on the rise in the past 5 years, according to latest data of the Ministry of Agriculture and Foods.

While in 2005 Bulgaria produced 20 000 metric tons of rice, in 2010, its output reached 57 000 metric tons, the newly released ministry data shows.

The average rice output per decare of cultivated land in Bulgaria in 2005-2010 ranged from 448 kg to 522 kg.

The rice plots in Bulgaria have been growing by about 15% per year, with some of them being cultivated by farmers from Turkey who rent the land and then export the produce.

Government officials have stressed the fact that rice does not depend on climate factors since it requires full irrigation for its plots.

Bulgarian rice producers have complained about the high price of water, as 20% of their spending goes for irrigation.
